Q&A For the Cancer webinar

I work for a gyn oncologist, and almost every patient that he sees has gyn cancer of some sort. I have been told that if a patient is not actively being treated for cancer, that we are supposed to code with "history of" however, many of the patients that we see are found to have recurred once their scans come back. We are constantly monitoring them, and from a physician's standpoint, the patient is only considered "cured" when they have been cancer free for five years. This differs from the coding guidelines that I was told. Is there a middle ground?
